Google Testing Text-to-Speech Feature for Reading Mode in Chrome Desktop
1 min readAccording to Android Police’s report, Google is currently testing a speech-to-text feature for the reading mode in Chrome’s desktop version.
As indicated by user Leopeva64, this feature is available in Google’s latest version of Chrome, specifically in Chrome Canary. Users with this feature can make use of Google’s text-to-speech capability by clicking the play button at the top of an article in reading mode. Leopeva64 also shared a link to a video showcasing this feature on Reddit.
The initial implementation of this feature appears to be relatively basic, but functional, as seen in the video. Despite some areas for improvement, if Google decides to widely implement this new text-to-speech feature, it could become a great option for Chrome users who prefer to receive information audibly. The hope is that the company can make the voices sound less “robotic.”
It’s worth noting that Microsoft Edge has already had a similar feature for some time.
